Ripon Council for Voluntary Service is a not-for-profit limited company with charitable status. The constitution was adopted and the organisation was registered in 1967 with amendments to the constitution being made in 1979 and 1987. Limited company status was granted in 2002. It is governed by a Board of Directors and is a membership organisation.

Ripon Council for Voluntary Service (Ripon CVS) is a Local Infrastructure Organisation.
- It supports the work of social and medical services, and of voluntary organisations involved in community care
- It looks into areas of need and finds means of meeting them
- It recruits volunteers for existing organisations and for new projects
- It supports voluntary organisations by providing a common meeting place for discussion and planning, and by circulating information
- It offers information and advice to individuals
- It offers training in volunteer management and in the practical aspects of voluntary work

Ripon Council for Voluntary Service is an associated member of the National Association for Voluntary and Community Action, a member of Volunteering England, and a member of the North Yorkshire Forum for Voluntary Organisations. It is also represented on a large number of local networks, such as the Forums (Children & Young People's Mental Health Group, Mental Health Forum, Harrogate & District Domestic Abuse Forum & The Older People's Reference Group), the Voluntary Forum which meets with Harrogate Borough Council, and the local Learning Partnership.
